The Battle of Messines Ridge
December 7th, 2016
The attack was a precursor to the much larger Third Battle of Ypres, known as Passchendaele. It was preceded by the detonation of 19 huge mines, totaling around 500 tons, under the German lines. The explosion was the loudest man made sound in history, apparently heard in Dublin and by Lloyd George in Downing Street. The effect of the explosion was devastating, 10,000 German troops were killed. The battle cost 42,000 men, Allied and German.
Before the explosion General Plumer remarked to his staff; “Gentlemen, we may not make history tomorrow, but we shall certainly change the geography.”
