Second Battle of the Somme
December 7th, 2016
A huge German offensive known as Die Kaiserschlacht takes place south of Arras. Over five hours the Germans fire one million shells, more than 3,000 shells every minute. The bombardment is followed by an attack by elite storm troopers. At the end of the first day, around 20,000 British soldiers are captured and the Germans have broken through the British lines.
