Armistice Day

British capture Mons before dawn. Germany signs an armistice with the Allies at 5.10 am, agreeing to the punitive terms to end the War. The agreement comes into effect at 11am.

The last British soldier to be killed in the War was Private George Edwin Ellison of the 5th Royal Irish Lancers. He is killed at Mons, at 09.30am, 90 minutes before the ceasefire, having fought since 1914.

The last man to be killed in the War dies at 10.59. American soldier Private Henry Gunter has been ordered to advance and take a German machine gun post. His divisional record states: “Almost as he fell, the gunfire died away and an appalling silence prevailed.”
