The Whitworth Centre

June 6th, 2014

The Whitworth Centre, Darley Dale is planning to put together a commemorative event for the centenary.

The building, set in its own park, was built by the Victorian engineer, Sir Joseph Whitworth, and was used as a hospital during the Great War.

The grounds are also home to the War Memorial and the memorial to Sir Joseph, inventor of the Whitworth screw thread, used on all cameras to this day to fasten them to a tripod. Sir Joseph is also credited with persuading the Board of Trade to adopt standard measures.
