Free Derbyshire First World War Material Online
August 27th, 2014
Did you know that here at Derbyshire Record Office we’re busy digitising our First World War material so it can be accessed for free on our online catalogue? This is a mammoth undertaking, so it will take us a few years to get everything on – the copyright checks alone are a complicated business involving a chain of staff dealing with each stage! We’re also still feeling our way in getting things like the image size right for viewing online, but we’ll get there in the end.
In the meantime, here’s a recent and unusual discovery that’s been digitised – a roll book for a platoon of the Royal Welch Fusiliers which you can see by following this link: http://bit.ly/1pdkEvp. This belonged to Charles Sisum Wright of Eyam Hall, who must have led No. 8 Platoon. Normally the Record Office wouldn’t hold army records, but obviously C S Wright never handed the roll book back in when he finished his military service and it ended up among the Wright family papers.
This is just one of the thousands of First World War documents held at the Record Office. If you’re researching the First World War in your area then do have a look at the online catalogue or drop into the Record Office to see what you can discover.
