World War One – Castleton Remembers
Castleton Historical Society received £5,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for their project “World War One – Castleton remembers”, which involved researching and collating documents, newspaper reports and photographs. The aim was to build a picture of the village during the war and to look at the stories of some of the families who were drastically affected by it. Members of the Historical Society did the research and the results were turned into an exhibition which was displayed in Castleton Visitor Centre throughout August 2014.
The research was also used in a local production of “Oh What a Lovely War” by the Peveril Players and poems and paintings using the theme of ‘Poppies’ made by children from Castleton Primary School were given to the exhibition.
The project aims to be a lasting resource for the community, encouraging further memories and research.
