Derbyshire Remembers

Derbyshire Remembers was a Heritage Lottery funded community project run by Fifth Word Theatre in partnership with the National Trust, Derbyshire Record Office and Derby Local & Family History Library. It uncovered the story of how the First World War changed the lives of people across Derby City and Derbyshire.

Over a period of six months local volunteers received training from partner organisations and worked to collate primary sources relating to the Great War.  From this information child-friendly archive cards were made and then used as a starting point for working in schools, where  Fifth Word Theatre led innovative sessions.

Dale Primary School and Sudbury Primary School transformed their classrooms into an office environment and worked as a team of ‘experts’ responsible for selecting the themes and sources to make an exhibition. Dale Primary School explored life on the homefront including the Zeppelin raid in Derby, the munitions workers and the recruitment of local men while Sudbury Primary School explored the lives of serving Soldiers from Derbyshire. The exhibition, the culmination of the project was held at Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall in 2015.

The Derbyshire Remembers website features resources and a film about the project.
