Buxton: New Thoughts – Old War

About 20 students aged 12-14 from Buxton Community School and St Thomas Moore School volunteered to be part of a creative writing project. Three workshops – led by experienced writers Rob Stevens, F Philip Holland and Helen Stewart – supported the young authors in their work. They looked at what they knew and understood about the events of the First World War and put together their thoughts and responses as poignant poetry. With local musicians and the adult choir from St Mary’s Church providing the music the students performed their work at St John’s Church.  The church itself was decorated with a hedgerow bearing red poppies in front of which the groups of writers and readers stood.

The evening was attended by the Mayor and supported by High Peak Borough Council.
